Pieter van der Hijden (1949) grew up in the most southern part of The Netherlands, close to the
German and Belgium borders. After his Gymnasium-ß, he studied Physical Engineering at Eindhoven
University of Technology. In 1974 he finished his master’s thesis in system- and control-engineering
by extending the Club-of-Rome World Model by Dennis Meadows et al. with a rich-poor dimension.
Pieter became assistant professor at the Social Systems Research Group at Radboud University
Nijmegen. He developed the method of interactive simulation, a combination of computer simulation
and gaming/simulation. He moved to the Futures Research Unit at Leiden University where he
developed an interactive computer simulation model of the Dutch education system.
Pieter continued his career with the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment. There he was
corporate consultant for management and information technology. He became head of the
departmental computer centre and later chief inspector of the organisational health & safety
inspection. Apart from these part-time functions he set up his own consulting firm, Sofos Consultancy.
Since 2000, Pieter works full-time as an independent consultant via Sofos Consultancy. His clients
are mainly found in government agencies and higher education institutes. He specialises in e-
learning, e-government and gaming/simulation.
